Auditable financial AI

Tax math that shows its work.

The question

What would an AI agent need before it could be trusted with a founder’s books and taxes?

An audit of the app found wrong tax calculations, with duplicate and unreviewed rows flowing straight into its totals.

How it works

01/04

A language model reads bank statements and tax documents into a local ledger.

Design concept, demo data

Inside the system

The rules, visible in the interface.

Proposals

Nothing changes until you approve it.

The agent finds deductions and explains each one. It can’t approve them: the tool that proposes them has no field for it.

Invented data
Rebuilt with invented data.
  1. The promise, in the panel

The panel says it plainly: nothing changes your return until you do.

  2. Risk at a glance

A dot grades each proposal green, orange or red, so the risky ones get a closer look.

  3. The reason travels with it

Each proposal carries its reasoning, so approving is informed, not blind.

  4. One deliberate action

Approve all shows the total it will apply. Each row then reads Applied.

Readiness

A founder and a company, never added together.

A founder and their company file different returns. The readiness hero keeps them apart — and the saving it shows is a recompute of the return, not a rate multiplied out.

Invented data
Rebuilt with invented data.
  1. You and your company, separately

Separate tracks and separate returns, never summed into one misleading number.

  2. Readiness per return

Each track has its own readiness and its own refund or balance due.

  3. A saving you can trust

The return is computed before and after a change; the difference is the saving.

Worksheets

Computed lines are locked.

A worksheet shows where every number came from: computed lines are bold and locked, a typed value is an override, and a line fed by a document names it.

Invented data
Rebuilt with invented data.
  1. Computed, not typed

Bold, blue and locked: this line is computed.

  2. Where it came from

    A chip names the document that feeds the line — a W-2, a 1099-INT.

  3. Overrides are visible

Type over a line and it becomes a marked override, never mistaken for a computed one.

Payees

The bank is the source of truth.

You can say what money was for — contractors, a vendor — but never more than left the bank. Each vendor-year reconciles or says it doesn’t.

Invented data
Rebuilt with invented data.
  1. What left the bank

The outflow comes from statements, not from what anyone declares.

  2. What it was for

Declared contractor payments are checked against the outflow.

  3. Reconciles — or not

Green when it reconciles, red when it doesn’t. The guard refuses a declaration larger than the outflow.

An agent is only as trustworthy as the numbers it refuses to make up.
